Citing her contributions to the HEADWAE program, Lieutenant Governor Phil Bryant recently honored Gloria Miller, Coordinator of Student Affairs and P-20 Initiatives for the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning, with a resolution recognizing and commending her for her efforts. Lieutenant Governor Bryant presented the resolution to Miller at the 24th annual HEADWAE luncheon, held recently in Jackson.

Miller serves as coordinator of HEADWAE (Higher Education Day – Working for Academic Excellence), which is sponsored each year by the State Legislature and chaired by the Lieutenant Governor. HEADWAE was established in 1988 by legislative resolution to honor individual academic achievement and the overall contribution of the state’s public and private institutions of higher learning. A Pearl resident, Miller has been coordinator of HEADWAE for the past seven years.

“I am so surprised and honored by this resolution from the Lieutenant Governor,” said Miller. “It is an honor and privilege to be part of a program that recognizes so many outstanding students and faculty members. To receive this recognition is really icing on the cake.”

Miller has been employed with the IHL Board office for over 21 years and currently works in the Office of Academic and Student Affairs. During her tenure at IHL, she has held positions in the Office of the Commissioner, Public Affairs, Office of Research and Planning and State Student Financial Aid.

“Gloria does a wonderful job coordinating the HEADWAE program,” said Dr. Al Rankins, Associate Commissioner for Academic and Student Affairs. “The honorees begin the day with a visit to the State Capitol where they are welcomed and recognized by the Senate and House of Representatives and given a tour of the Capitol. The day culminates with a luncheon in honor of the faculty and staff representatives attended by education leaders, legislators and the business community. Gloria and her team of volunteers attend to every detail to ensure the day is perfect for the honorees.”

Gloria has a bachelor’s degree from Belhaven University in Business Administration with a concentration in management. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Public Policy and Administration, with a human resource management concentration, from Jackson State University. She plans to graduate in the fall 2011.

“My passion is to be an advocate for individuals facing the challenges of obtaining their educational goals,” said Miller. “I am very grateful to have the opportunity to help others through my work with the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning.”
