ALCORN STATE UNIVERSITY

Event: Alcorn State University will conduct an awareness campaign in observance of National Child Abuse Prevention Month. The 1974 Legislation Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA) was instituted to increase public awareness and to ensure safety and welfare of children. The blue ribbon campaign, started in 1989, was initiated by a grandmother from Virginia who paid tribute to her grandson who died as a result of abuse by tying a blue ribbon to the antenna of her car. Building on this national momentum, the ASU Department of Human Sciences is planning to conduct an awareness campaign by distributing blue ribbons. Event: Two Mississippi State graduates of the 1970s now holding major Magnolia State judicial posts will be featured speakers for the university’s spring commencements. At the 9 a.m. commencement, Mississippi Supreme Court Chief Justice William L. "Bill" Waller Jr. of Jackson will address graduates, while the 2 p.m. commencement will be feature U.S. Northern District Judge Sharion H. Aycock will be the speaker.

Event: Mississippi Valley State University Golden Key International Honour Society will have its Chartering and New Member Recognition Event. Event: Mississippi Valley State University will hold the Alpha Lambda Delta Chartering Ceremony. Alpha Lambda Delta is an honor society for students who have maintained a 3.5 or higher GPA on a 4.0 scale and are in the top 20 percent of their class during their first year or term of higher education. Event: Solos by two UM music students are among the highlights of the Lafayette-Oxford-University Symphony Orchestra spring concert, which is to open with the Masquerade Suite of Armenian composer Aram Khatchaturian and also features Robert Schumann's Symphony No. 4 in D minor. Joshua Hall, a freshman music education major from Southaven, and Ben McLemore, a senior music education major from Corinth, are set to play solos during the performance. Event: A forum on Green Innovators Sustainability features student presentations about recycling, green building, food and water conservation, and transportation issues in the L-O-U community. Local sustainability leaders and experts will help field comments and questions from the audience as part of an interactive discussion about ways to make the community more sustainable. The forum, co-sponsored by a journalism class and the UM Office of Sustainability, is free and open to the public.

Event: Eight of the nation's most talented young tap dancers take to the stage in "Tap Kids," a rousing, joyous celebration of American youth culture. In a series of musical vignettes, this theatrical production by New York Stage Originals tells the story of a group of high school kids facing challenges both mundane and momentous as they prepare for the big school dance at the end of their senior year.
