Event: Alcorn State University will host the Earth Day 2010 Celebration themed “Create Green Act/Billion Acts of Green.” Activities include:
The celebration will end with an Earth Day social. There will be videos and a display of informational booths on the environment by the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ), and the Engineering Research Development Center at Water Ways Experiment Station. Event: A Neshoba County native and former three-term Mississippi secretary of state Dick Molpus will be featured Tuesday [April 20] at Mississippi State's 2010 Carlton N. Owen Lecture Series. Event: Mississippi State's Environmental Collaborative Office will hold an Earth Day fair to highlight campus and community environmentally-friendly programs and activities. Event: Mississippi State's Entrepreneurship Center will host an event for World Creativity and Innovation Day, highlighting student entrepreneurs who have created their own businesses. MISSISSIPPI UNIVERSITY FOR WOMEN
Event: The Office of Community Service, Campus Recreation and the Wesley Foundation at MUW will package 30,000 meals to support Stop Hunger Now, an international hunger relief organization that coordinates dehydrated food distribution around the world. The organizations at MUW have already packaged and sent 12,000 meals in January. Donations will be accepted until the event. Cash, change and checks will be accepted, and checks should be made payable to the Wesley Foundation. All volunteers are welcome to help package meals. For more information, contact Jessica Harpole.

Event: Approximately 200 participants are expected to attend the Southern Literary Festival hosted at MUW. The public is invited to attend readings by southern authors, Jeanie Thompson, Dedra Johnson and Alan Huffman, sponsored by grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities through the Mississippi Humanities Council, the Mississippi Arts Commission and the Columbus Convention and Visitors Bureau. The festival has been preceded by a literary contest for students from member schools. Categories in the contest are short fiction, poetry, informal and formal essays and one act plays. Each school submits up to two entries in each category and the final choices are made by outside judges. During the day on Friday and Saturday, there will be readings by the student prize winners in each category and by the workshop leaders. MISSISSIPPI VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITY
Event: The Lyceum Committee at Mississippi Valley State University will present violinist Tami Lee Hughes in recital. Joining Hughes will be pianist and MVSU faculty member Lawrence Goldman. The program will include violin and piano duo sonatas by Mozart and Brahms, as well as a selection of unique works by African-American composers, including George Morrison, Ozie Cargile and Chad Hughes. A native of Baton Rouge, Hughes is a highly sought after soloist, teacher and clinician. Her career has spanned the United States, including solo appearances with the National Symphony Orchestra, the Mississippi Symphony, the Monroe Symphony, and the Pontiac-Oakland Symphony Orchestra. Currently Dr. Hughes serves as a faculty member and assistant professor of violin at the University of Kansas School of Music.

Event: Mississippi Valley State University Observance of Earth Week will be held April 19-23. Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to carpool with a colleague to conserve fuel. On Tuesday, Valley constituents are encouraged to bring their recyclable electronics such as cell phones, laptops and computers. In addition, individuals are asked to bring their own water receptacles in lieu of purchasing drinks in plastic bottles or cans. On Wednesday, The Valley will unveil its new cardboard baler and highlight recycling bin locations. Rounding out the week on Thursday and highlighting Earth Day at 9 a.m. will be the grand flower bed “planting” as children from the MVSU Child Development Center as they sow flowers, herbs and vegetables.

Event: The University of Mississippi and the city of Oxford are teaming up to promote a more sustainable lifestyle during the second annual UM-Oxford Green Week. Each day features a different theme: recycling and waste minimization on Monday, transportation on Tuesday, energy conservation on Wednesday, green initiative awareness on Thursday and Local Community Day on Friday. Information on several pledge opportunities will be available throughout the week that encourage people to learn by doing and by serving others through activities such as recycling, adopting a highway or by taking the bus. Event: Longtime "NBC Nightly News" anchor Tom Brokaw examines society in a high-tech world during a public address on "Life is Not a Virtual Experience – Citizenship Beyond the Keyboard." Brokaw also is serving as a guest lecturer all week for an honors college journalism course being taught by Curtis Wilkie, UM's Cook Chair of Journalism. The public lecture is free and open to the public.

Event: The departments of Music and Theatre Arts are collaborating to present an evening of laughter and tears, courtesy of the Italian master composer Giacomo Puccini, with the UM Opera Theatre productions of "Suor Angelica," a one-act tragedy set in a convent near Siena, Italy, and sung in Italian; and "Gianni Schicchi," a one-act comedy set in Florence and sung in English. UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI GULF PARK CAMPUS
Event: The Southern Miss Steel Pan Orchestra will perform a free community concert. Founded in 1994 by Dr. John Wooton, the Southern Miss Steel Pan Orchestra began as a six-piece ensemble including a drum set and percussion. The band, which now features 30 members, plays a variety of music including traditional calypso, classical, Cuban and jazz. Event: Nearly 10 years after The University of Southern Mississippi hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the Advanced Education Center on the Gulf Park campus, the building will be named for the university’s seventh president, Dr. Horace W. Fleming. The building dedication to name the Horace Weldon Fleming, Jr. Education Center will be at the Gulf Park campus in Long Beach. The public is invited to attend. Fleming, who died in May 2009, served as president of Southern Miss from 1997-2001 during which freshman and sophomore courses were introduced at the university’s Gulf Park campus. In October of 2000, the university broke ground for the $13.3 million construction project that included both the Advanced Education Center and library at the Gulf Park campus. The Advanced Education Center features 20 regular classrooms; three computer laboratories; two interactive video network rooms; a conference room; and a 500-seat auditorium. Event: In recognition of The University of Southern Mississippi’s Centennial Celebration, the Southern Miss Gulf Coast Civic Chorale will perform “‘Begin the Celebration’ 100 Years of Music: A Centennial Performance,” which will feature a song from each decade since the university’s founding in 1910. The chorale, in its 15th year at Southern Miss, features 85 singers from across the Mississippi Gulf Coast and is under the direction of John Flanery. Serving as a community outreach program for the university, the ensemble meets once each week for rehearsal and performs a wide variety of choral literature throughout the year.
