Event: The Praxis Examination Preparatory Courses for the MS Teacher Licensure Examinations will be offered at the Alcorn State University Natchez and Vicksburg Campuses The preparatory courses are one credit hour at the cost $250. Event: Partnership for Mississippi Education and Development Initiative will hold the “The Legacy of Timbuktu Exhibition” teacher training series. JSU President Ronald Mason Jr. will be the opening speaker at 8 a.m. March 9.

Event: Mississippi State University's department of Communication presents "The Man from Aldergate," a one-man portrayal about the 18th century English theologian who founded the Methodist faith. Missionary BJ Johnston of Jackson will play the role of John Wesley. General admission is $10 for the performance adapted from Wesley's journals.

Event: Diplomat Hajime Hayashi, economic minister of the Embassy of Japan in Washington, D.C., will speak in Jackson at an event sponsored by Mississippi State University's Janos Radvanyi Chair in International Security Studies. The veteran of the Japanese Foreign Ministry currently works to promote bilateral cooperation between the nation and the United States.

MISSISSIPPI UNIVERSITY FOR WOMEN

Event: The MUW International Student Association and Office of Community living will have a Festival of Colors. The event is a typical celebration in parts of South Asia that heralds the beginning of spring. Some people celebrate the festival by throwing colored powder and water at each other. MUW's event will include colors, music, food and fun.

Event: The annual spring choral concert will feature Encore, University Chorus, MUW Chamber Singers and MUW Chorale. There is no admission charge.

Event: The Center for Entrepreneurship at MUW will host a seminar for individuals who are thinking about starting their own business. Event: Ambassador John Dinger of the U.S. State Department discusses national security and terrorism issues in a free, public lecture sponsored by the UM Center for Intelligence and Security Studies, Croft Institute for International Studies, Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College and Department of Legal Studies. Dinger's lecture focuses on the State Department's role in the war of terrorism, among other issues.

Event: Featuring powerful musical numbers such as "Summertime" and "It Ain't Necessarily So," the moving story of "Porgy and Bess" comes to the University of Mississippi for the only Mississippi performance on the show's 75th anniversary tour. Event: The Lafayette-Oxford-University Symphony is set to perform works from a variety of cultures for its spring concert, opening with the overture from the opera "The Force of Destiny" by Guiseppe Verdi and concluding with "El Amor Brujo," a ballet by Manuel de Falla. Event: Dr. Wayne Lee, associate professor of history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will open the 5th Annual Richard McCarthy Lecture Series discussing the historical concept of a “Southern Way of War.”

UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI GULF PARK CAMPUS

Event: The Katrina Research Center at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast will conclude the last week of the Smithsonian Institution’s Journey Stories exhibit with three final presentations. The first event, a panel discussion on Hurricane Katrina and women in the fine arts, will be led by Melody Golding of Vicksburg Monday, March 8 at 6:30 p.m. The second presentation will be made by Charles Gray on the history of Hancock County Tuesday, March 9, at 6 p.m. The final presentation is by Pass Christian Alderman Rory Robin Rafferty, Jr. on the history of Pass Christian Wednesday, March 10 at 5 p.m. Journey Stories is an interactive exhibit addressing migration and immigration as they relate to the American experience. The Journey Stories exhibit, sponsored by the Smithsonian Institution and Mississippi Humanities Council, will be on display at the Katrina Research Center until March 11. Event: The time has come for the Southern Miss Gulf Coast College Quiz Bowl where eight teams will compete for the coveted Southern Miss Gulf Coast College Quiz Bowl championship trophy. The College Quiz Bowl is an academic competition pitting one team of students, faculty or staff against another. The winner advances to the next round, until only 2 teams are left to compete in the Final Round. Questions will be gathered from the following five colleges: Arts and Letters, Business, Education and Psychology, Health, and Science and Technology. Event: The Sun Herald and The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast College of Business will present the Issues + Answers lecture “Is the Coast Ready for Hollywood: Lessons Learned on My Journey to Tinseltown… and Back,” with Margaret Loesch. Loesch is the first president and CEO of the new Discovery/Hasbro Joint Venture, LLC, The Hub. She and her team are rebuilding the Discovery Kids Channel and creating new family entertainment programming for television. Issues + Answers lectures are free and open to the public.
