Event: Dr. Kimball P. Marshall, professor of marketing, MBA Program, will hold a national Webinar sponsored by the Southern Rural Development Center (SRDC) of Mississippi State. The purpose is to encourage people in rural areas with limited resources to become involved in Internet-based E-Commerce

Event: Four Alcorn State University students majoring in music performance - Naomi Isumi, Matthew Pattigrew, Anton and Vera Zholondz - will participate in the 44th Annual Conference of the National Collegiate Honors Council. Event: BET Foundation Women's Health Symposium at Jackson State University. The national four-city tour brings together several thousand women of color for a day of health education, fitness facts, fun and entertainment by national recording artists. Event: Mississippi State University, the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, and the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians host the 2009 Rivercane Symposium. The event focuses on the cultural and economic value of rivercane to the Southeastern native people, restoration and management of canebrakes, and propagation methods.

Event: MUW's Department of Health and Kinesiology and Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle will sponsor a Women's Health and Wellness Luncheon. Dr. Bethany Reed Hairston will discuss knowing your skin on Oct. 28. Dr. Christina Collins will discuss staying healthy on Oct. 29. Both sessions are free and open to the first 64 callers.

Event: The Culinary Arts Institute at MUW has partnered with Dr. Jacqueline Hampton, a local physician, and NovoNordisk, a healthcare company specializing in diabetes care, to do a series of diabetes education classes. The first class will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 28, and will feature senior culinary arts major Stephanie Ward, who will demonstrate healthy snacks and tailgating ideas. A second class will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 11, and will feature AnHoward Schubert, another senior culinary arts major, who will prepare diabetic-friendly recipes for the holidays.

Event: John Neff, associate professor of history and UM's 2009 Humanities Teacher of the Year, discusses "Our Hearts Were Touched with Fire - The Memory of the Civil War." Neff, founding director of the Center for Civil War Research, will discuss how the war's impact still reverberates throughout American society.

Event: The Department of Physics and Astronomy presents Spooky Science Night, an evening of Halloween fun where families can learn about waves, electricity, magnetism and more. Experiments and demonstrations include a Van der Graff generator, a bed of nails, fire, levitation using electromagnetic fields and freezing ice cream with liquid nitrogen.

Event: The University of Mississippi Medical Center hosts its annual Excellence in Research Awards Ceremony and Reception, honoring faculty who have distinguished themselves with exceptional research.

Event: The UMMC Department of Student/Employee Health, the Disaster Preparedness Committee and the Mississippi State Department of Health will host an "H1N1 Vaccination Blitz" for all Medical Center faculty, staff, students, and volunteers.

Where: H1N1 vaccination stations will be located in room C099-1 (the old pediatric outpatient area of the Blair E. Batson Hospital for Children) and in the Department of Student/Employee Health.

Event: The 2009 Viking Classic, Mississippi's only PGA tour event, starts next week. The tournament benefits Century Club Charities, which has chosen Friends of Children's Hospital as its primary charity.
