BOARD TO ACCEPT COMMISSIONER MEREDITH'S REQUEST TO RETIRE

10/22/2008 - Jackson, Miss.

In a statement issued to the general public earlier today, Commissioner of Higher Education Dr. Thomas C. Meredith formally announced his decision to retire from the position of Commissioner, effective close of business November 15, 2008. Until that time, the Commissioner will be available to the Board on an as-needed basis. The Board is expected to accept Commissioner Meredith's request during its next meeting, currently scheduled for Friday, October 24, 2008, beginning at 2:00 pm in room 935 of the IHL Executive Office, 3825 Ridgewood Road, Jackson, MS, 39211.

"During his tenure, Commissioner Meredith made a positive difference for Mississippi's eight public universities and within Mississippi's public education system," said IHL Board President Amy Whitten. "We are grateful for his many accomplishments, and are confident his vision of increasing the quantity of baccalaureate degree holders of even higher quality will continue."

The Mississippi Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning governs the public universities in Mississippi, including Alcorn State University; Delta State University; Jackson State University; Mississippi State University including the Mississippi State University Division of Agriculture, Forestry and Veterinary Medicine; Mississippi University for Women; Mississippi Valley State University; the University of Mississippi including the University of Mississippi Medical Center; and the University of Southern Mississippi.
