The Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL) will hold several committee meetings on Tuesday, August 14, 2007, including the Educational Policies and Procedures Committee, chaired by Trustee Bettye Neely, beginning at 11:30 a.m.; the Gulf Coast Committee, chaired by Trustee Amy Whitten, beginning at 1:00 p.m.; the Strategic Planning Committee, chaired by Trustee Thomas Colbert, beginning at 2:30 p.m.; and the Commissioner's Evaluation Committee, also chaired by Trustee Thomas Colbert, beginning at 3:45 p.m. All committee meetings will take place in the IHL Board Room in the Universities Center, 3825 Ridgewood Road, Jackson, MS, 39211. For each committee meeting, an executive session may be held in accordance with the Open Meetings Act.
The Board will hold its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, August 15, 2007, beginning at 8:30 a.m., also in the IHL Board Room in the Universities Center, 3825 Ridgewood Road, Jackson, MS, 39211. The full Board will convene at 8:30 a.m. and will then conduct business as a committee of the whole. The Board meeting will be available for real-time viewing via live webcast on the IHL website, www.mississippi.edu.
Various Board committees, including Educational Policies and Programs; Budget, Finance, and Audit; Real Estate and Facilities; and Legal will meet as part of the Board meeting. An executive session may be held in accordance with the Open Meetings Act.
As part of the meeting, members of the Mississippi State Board of Education will join the Board to hear a presentation from Dr. Lynn House, assistant commissioner for academic and student affairs, regarding the preliminary recommendations of the Blue Ribbon Committee for the Redesign of Teacher Education (BRC), co-chaired by Trustee Bettye Neely. The BRC convened November 2006 to increase the quality and quantity of teachers in Mississippi by improving teacher preparation and recruitment programs in the state. After extensive research and evaluation, the BRC has identified a number of recommended changes to Mississippi's teacher education programs.
Under the leadership of the Board of Trustees, IHL governs the public universities in Mississippi, including Alcorn State University; Delta State University; Jackson State University; Mississippi State University including the Mississippi State University Division of Agriculture, Forestry and Veterinary Medicine; Mississippi University for Women; Mississippi Valley State University; the University of Mississippi including the University of Mississippi Medical Center; and the University of Southern Mississippi.
