BOARD TO ATTEND MISSISSIPPI'S MANDATE PRESENTATION

The Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL) will hold its regular monthly meeting next Wednesday and Thursday, May 17 and 18, in the Board Room of the Universities Center, 3825 Ridgewood Road, Jackson. The Board will meet on Wednesday, May 17, at 1:30 p.m. in the Board Room and will walk to the Mississippi Public Broadcasting Auditorium, where it will be part of a taped-for-broadcast presentation of Mississippi’s Mandate, beginning at 1:45 p.m. The program will be hosted by Senior Associate Dr. Ronald Phipps of the Washington, D.C.-based Institute for Higher Education Policy. Mississippi’s Mandate, an important benchmark for the state’s understanding of its educational progress and needs, will enumerate a number of benefits, both public and private, that accrue from additional education. Invited guests include state government dignitaries, among them State Superintendent Dr. Hank Bounds and members of the Mississippi Department of Education Board of Directors; Director of the State Board for Community and Junior Colleges Dr. Wayne Stonecypher and members of its Board of Directors; members of the House and Senate Education and Universities and Colleges Committees; and the Board of Directors for Mississippi Public Broadcasting. All media are invited and encouraged to attend. Mississippi’s Mandate will be broadcast statewide on Mississippi Public Broadcasting Friday, May 19, at 8:30 p.m. Funding for Mississippi’s Mandate is made possible through the support of USA Funds. The production and broadcast of the Mandate is sponsored by Mississippi Public Broadcasting.

The full Board will convene following the Mississippi’s Mandate presentation on Wednesday, May 17, in the Board Room of the Universities Center, 3825 Ridgewood Road, Jackson. Various Board committee meetings, including Educational Policies and Programs; Budget, Finance and Audit; Real Estate and Facilities; Legal; and Governance will meet as part of the Board meeting. The Board meeting will continue Thursday, May 18, with the full Board convening at 8:30 a.m. An Executive Session may be held in accordance with the Open Meetings Act.

Under the leadership of the Board of Trustees, IHL governs the public universities in Mississippi, including Alcorn State University; Delta State University; Jackson State University; Mississippi State University including the Mississippi State University Division of Agriculture, Forestry and Veterinary Medicine; Mississippi University for Women; Mississippi Valley State University; the University of Mississippi including the University of Mississippi Medical Center; and the University of Southern Mississippi.
