5/1/2019 - Jackson, Miss.
Mississippi Public Universities will award 11,518 bachelor’s, master’s, specialists and doctoral degrees during Spring Commencement Exercises. The system total for Spring 2019 represents an increase of 192 graduates from Spring 2018, when the total number of degrees awarded was 11,326.
"Earning a college degree is a milestone accomplishment for an individual," said Dr. Alfred Rankins Jr., Commissioner of Higher Education. "I congratulate all the graduates, along with the faculty and family who helped them achieve this goal. This also benefits our state as these graduates enter the workforce and help grow Mississippi’s economy."
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), obtaining higher levels of education increases an individual’s earning power. As the BLS charts below show, earning a degree increases income while decreasing the likelihood of being unemployed.
The median weekly earnings for someone with a bachelor’s degree, with no additional advanced degree, is $1,173. This compares with $712 median weekly earnings for high school graduates and $520 median weekly earnings for those with less than a high school diploma. Those with a professional degree have the greatest earning power at $1,836 median weekly earnings. Unemployment rates range from 6.5 percent for those with less than a high school diploma to 1.5 percent for those with a doctoral degree.
