Getting healthy is often at the top of New Year's Resolutions and to-do lists. Employees at the Education Research Center with this goal will have the opportunity to receive the tools and information needed to achieve it. The 2016 Annual Health Fair will be held on Thursday, January 28, 2016 from 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at the Mississippi Library Commission, 3881 Eastwood Drive in Jackson.
The Health Fair will feature screenings, educational materials and door prizes from a variety of vendors. The free health screenings include blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), weight and height, vision and dental. Hinds Community College faculty and Associate Degree Nursing students will provide blood pressure screening and educational materials.
Sponsored by the University of Mississippi Medical Center's School of Nursing, Dental School, School of Ophthalmology, and Central Collection Department, the Health Fair will also offer a variety of additional free Health Screening Packages on a first-come, first-served basis to employees who pre-register. These screenings include lipid panel, glucose, including A1c Hemoglobin if indicated, and bone density for women over age 50.
Information will be available on a variety of health-related topics, including arthritis, Alzheimer's Disease, resources for the blind and visually impaired, cancer, employee wellness programs, ergonomics, gastrointestinal issues, mental health, nutrition, oral health, organ/other donation, smoking cessation and developing a health plan. The Public Employees Retirement System will also provide retirement information.
The Annual Health Fair is organized by the Education Research Center Worksite Wellness Committee, which includes representatives from the Mississippi Community College Board, the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning, the Mississippi Library Commission, Mississippi Public Broadcasting, the Mississippi State Board of Nursing Home Administrators, and the Mississippi State Board of Physical Therapy.
