Students from Mississippi Public Universities are springing into action this week to make Mississippi a healthier state, planning an array of activities that range from a blood drive to a bow-tie gala to night race with glow sticks. An initiative of the Mississippi Public Universities Student Body Presidents Council, Spring Into Health Week encourages students across the eight universities to lead healthier lives through a variety of fun activities focusing on nutrition, exercise and overall wellness.

University of Mississippi students got into the groove with “Groove and Glow,” an event featuring Zumba, Turbokick and Step events with glow sticks on Monday evening. Mississippi State University will also get in on the glow stick action with the Second Annual Glow Run, a 5K race benefitting Blair E. Batson Children’s Hospital, which will be held on Thursday, February 27 at 7:00 p.m. Another 5K, the Otter 5K Run, will be held at the University of Mississippi on Wednesday, February 26 at 3:30 p.m. The run is sponsored by Sigma Nu Fraternity.

The University of Southern Mississippi is giving students the opportunity to learn all about fitness in the Union during lunch and participate in a fitness class in the lobby of Jones Hall on Tuesday, February 25 at 8:00 p.m. USM’s Century Park also hosted a nutrition presentation and cooking demonstration on Monday evening.

The Student Government Association at Mississippi University for Women is hosting a fundraiser for the Bow Tie for a Cause foundation, which supports numerous cancer research and youth development organizations. The event will be held Thursday, February 27 at 7:00 p.m. The University of Mississippi Medical Center will hold the third annual Jammin’ for the JFC (Jackson Free Clinic) lip sync competition on Thursday, February 27 at 6:00 p.m. in the Student Union. All proceeds benefit the JFC.

Delta State University’s Student Government Association is sponsoring a blood drive on Friday, February 28 from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. in front of the Student Union. Ole Miss students can compete for prizes in the Beep Test competition in the Grove on Thursday, February 27 from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. This fitness test involves continuous running between two lines that are 20 meters apart.

University of Mississippi Associated Student Body President Gregory Alston serves as president of the MPU Student Body Presidents Council. Other university student body presidents include: Avery J. Ford, Alcorn State University; Sydney Hodnett, Delta State University; Charles A. Cathey III, Jackson State University; Michael Hogan, Mississippi State University; Timothy Mbogo, Mississippi University for Women; Derrick Jones, Mississippi Valley State University; Bradley P. Deere, University of Mississippi Medical Center; and Ann Marie Chilcutt, University of Southern Mississippi.
